Vicious Wire :: Latest News

Dear Vicious,
On May 25, 2007 My father was attempting to leave the house and meet up with our bass club for a tournament on Lake Guntersville. He hooked the boat to the truck and pulled it out of the garage like he had done hundreds of times before. He thought he put the truck in park and exited the truck to close the garage door and put the motor in tow position. The truck was in reverse and it ran over my father.

He lost his life that morning. My father was a great man and I learned so much from him. Most memories are of fishing with him, because one thing that I could count on as a child was fishing every Saturday. As you can imagine, I was devastated on the day this occurred. The only thing I could think to do was a Bass Tournament in my fathers memory and donate the money to his Church's building fund in his name. I am still not sure of all the details on how Vicious found out about the tournament, but fishing line, stickers, and hats were donated for participants of the tournament.

I just want to say thank you for all you have done.

Stay Or Go
By Richard Newell, Vicious Tournament Team Member
In the world of competitive fishing a question will eventually arise during a tournament when the action is painfully slow or non-existent. Should I stay or go? I know guys who will give a spot twenty minutes and if they don't get a bite, they're gone. If you have better water then the spot you're leaving why did you start there in the first place?

If your confidant the fish are there but they won't bite, don't leave in too much of a hurry. Try a few of these techniques and maybe you'll catch those fish you found in practice. The number one thing I can tell you is to slow down. The excitement of a tournament the first few minutes after you pull into your spot will sometimes get to you and make you fish much too fast. You try to pull out five quick fish, instead of working one fish at a time.

Swim Bait Bassin
By: Steven W. Wells Vicious Team Member
Swim Bait's are not just for West Coast anglers to throw at trout gorging bass. I've found that they are dynamite on the East side of the country as well. It was foggy out and I could barely see the lure at the end of my line. I made a long cast with the huge bait and it splashed down next to the tree line I was fishing. I started a slow steady retrieve with my Quantum Energy E760PT. I could feel the bait throbbing as I slowly ticked the tops of the bottom growing weeds.

BRANDON, Miss. — Boater Gene Brown of West Point, Miss., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Mississippi Division tournament on Ross Barnett Reservoir Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces.

The victory earned Brown $4,363 plus a $769 Ranger contingency bonus and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Wheeler Lake Regional Championship in Decatur, Ala., Oct. 9-11, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

The World Record that could have been?
crappieOn January 10, 2008 Larry White and William Davis, from Sylacauga, Alabama, went crappie fishing. The pair caught 43.58 pounds of crappie all on a Crappie Slider, June Bug with a Chartreuse tail rigged on 8 Vicious Fluorocarbon. Ten of the crappie weighed 32.38 pounds, which would have shattered the world record by around seven pounds. The fish, however, were not officially weighed so the catch was not certified. William Davis is owner of Davis Bait Company and part of the Vicious family, which manufactures the Russ Lane Signature Series Jigs and Spinnerbaits under the Vicious Fishing brand.

Guys, congratulations on an extraordinary catch, but next time, PLEASE have the fish officially weighed!

Bass Fishing for Redfish
By Charlie Murray, Vicious Team Member
It's a common misconception in the fishing world that in order to properly pursue redfish in the salt and brackish marsh of the Gulf Coast one must purchase separate tackle to do so. This perception could be nothing further from the truth. I grew up in central Mississippi fishing the Pearl River and the Ross Barnett Reservoir for largemouth and spotted bass. Over the years I assembled an extensive (and expensive) assortment of "freshwater" bass fishing tackle.

Russ Lane is on the front page of Bassmaster Magazine for February issue of Bassmaster Magazine.

Russ caught an 11 pound 14 ounce bass during the "A Day on the Lake" article by Don Wirth. That bass was good enough for the cover of the Magazine.
