Musky

Musky:
The Muskellunge is often called the “King of Freshwater” and also has the dubious distinction of being called the fish of ten thousand casts.  The world record musky is sixty-nine pounds and fifteen ounces out of the Chippewa Flowage in Wisconsin.  Muskies are primarily sight feeders, keying on prey such as suckers, shad, cisco or tullibees, and anything else they can catch such as ducklings and frogs.  The Muskellunge ranges from southern Ontario in Canada, though out the Midwest (MN, WI, and MI) and the East (OH, NY, and PA) down south to Tennessee, and exists in a good number of western states including Colorado and Utah.

A good way to tell a musky from other fish which look similar is to count the pores that rest on the underside of its jaw a musky will have six or more, whereas other fish like northern pike will have less than five.  Muskies vary in coloration, and are present in the barred phase (Wisconsin strain), the spotted phase (Great Lakes strain) and the silver phase (Kentucky) and also the Minnesota or Leech Lake strain, which is also a spotted version of this great game fish.  Muskies are caught on a variety of lures such as crank baits, jerk baits, top water lures and bucktail spinners.  There is a professional tournament trail for muskies called the PMTT or Professional Musky Tournament Trail that covers the entire Upper Midwest each year.  Check out www.promusky.com for more information.
