Smallmouth Bass: The smallmouth bass is a freshwater fish that also falls into the sunfish family. Being one of the black basses it is a very popular gamefish that is sought out by anglers throughout the temperate areas in North America. The smallmouth has been used to stock many cool water rivers and lakes throughout the United States and Canada. This species of fish is native to the upper and middle Mississippi basin, the Great Lake system along with the basin of the Hudson Bay. There are many slang names for the smallmouth including Bronzeback, Brown Bass, Brownie, Bronze Bass, and Smallie used across the board. The smallmouth is usually brown with dark bands running vertically rather than horizontally, like the largemouth, along the side. There are a total of 13-15 soft rays contained in the dorsal fin of this fish. Spotted Bass: Another species of fish that belong to the sunfish family is the spotted bass. Also a black bass, it is native to the Mississippi River basin along the Gulf stated - starting in central Texas extending through the pan handle of Florida. A way to distinguish between a Spotted and a largemouth bass is the size of the mouth on the fish. A spotted bass will look similar to a largemouth in the coloration alone; however, the mouth is similar to the size of a smallmouth bass.
